Have Ball Park Music had a good year or what? Touring almost non-stop, becoming a regular on the festival circuit and having their debut album Happiness & Surrounding Suburbs debut at #36 on the ARIA charts, it’s fair to say the bubbly Brisbane sextet are worth their weight in fun-loving raucous indie tunes. And that weightiness was put to the test as a sold out crowd sandwiched into the stuffy Ed Castle to catch the band’s loveable antics.
Chatting with: Guineafowl
Since the release of his debut EP Hello Anxiety, Guineafowl has been on a massive roll; receiving Triple J play, plaudits from critics and touring the world on the back of the 5 track EP. Currently touring America and getting ready to release his first album, Guineafowl took the time out to answer some questions for myself and Shout Out Music about his tour, his musical influences and what the future holds.

Jumping into the fog with The Wombats
Note to self: next time I see The Wombats, take some earplugs coz GODDAMN those teenagers can scream.
I should’ve known though, with this being the 3rd time I’ve caught the marsupialised (yep, I just made up a word) trio in 12 months. And while admittedly their set hasn’t changed all too much the past 2 visits, they had lasers this time. And lasers are the shit.
If you want to read all about songs about prostitutes (x2), lasers, and why Jurassic Park just became 10x cooler then please, check out my review HERE (via Shout Out Music).

Triple J Unearthed Launch Party
On October 5th, thousands of people across the country joined in in a synchronised celebration for the launch of Triple J’s 2nd radio station- Unearthed. Designed entirely to play only unsigned Australian artists, there is no doubt that this 24/7 broadcast will do wonders for the Australian music industry… so plenty of reasons to celebrate.
In all major captial cities, parties were held featuring Triple J presenters and local acts that have benefited greatly from Unearthed (in it’s previous format- a website). Adelaide’s shenanigans took place at *shudder* Fowler’s Live and featured Triple J Mornings’ Zan Rowe and the king of Australian music, Home & Hosed’s Dom Alessio, both of whom span some fat beats behind the decks throughout the evening.
In terms of musical talent, the evening’s spread was generous: hip-hop duo Dialect & Despair, indie-rock favourites Fire! Santa Rosa, Fire! and The Salvadors all showcased their talent for the crowd and proved that Adelaide’s music scene is in safe hands.

Chatting with: Kirsty Akers
Yet another interview I completely forgot about (talk about slack), I whipped up a quick Q&A email interview with country music star Kirsty Akers, not my usual genre but I was lending a helping hand to the crew at The AU Review.
Talking about her new album Naked, the stereotype associated with country music and plenty more, is 23-year-old Novocastrian Kirsty Akers…

1+1 equals you and me, Owl Eyes
So my bad on this one, I went and saw the petite songstress a month or so ago now and forgot to post it to my blog.. oops! Anyway, this is how the evening went down.
Let’s be honest here, Australian Idol has produced some truly shocking “talent” along the likes of Casey Donavon, Kate DeAraugo and Natalie Gauci (I had to Google search those last two just to remember their names). So it’s a bit hard to believe that emerging out of the manufactured woodwork is Brooke Addamo (a.k.a Owl Eyes)…

Chatting with: Gold Fields (two words)
Gold Fields are the latest ‘next big thing’ getting props from the Triple J hype machine, but unlike most other acts, these guys are the real deal. With only one EP to their name, they already have a massive following, and after being one of the highlights of this year’s Parklife Festival, are heading for superstardom. I spoke with Mark Fuller for Shout Out Music about their EP, the recording process and travelling overseas.
